The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
