Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
