Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Deal.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The deal grants a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for ranking between fourth and tenth.
  • $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning often, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The next night in the championship game against the Team USA, he blasted a equalizing home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
