'Are You Not Entertained?' Why a Shortened Match Was No Less a Proper Cricket Test.

Within a glass case on the elevated floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground rests a neon pink ensemble donned by the entertainer. The concert in front of a massive crowd of fans was considered a major hit.

You might not enjoy the performer. Perhaps you believe he is the ultimate present to music the world has ever seen. Or you could adopt a balanced view, acknowledging that some hits are fantastic while others are awful.

The key argument is that enjoyment can be delivered diversely. Tastes vary. There is no one way to craft literature or even Test cricket.

The Peerless Spectrum of The Test Format

The five-day game boasts unrivalled depth. It is hard to think of another sport where the contest is so reliant upon conditions.

The elements, the session, the cricket ball – the factors are countless. Crucially is the pitch.

If the long game is an artistic pursuit, the wicket is the foundation on which the players create their art.

A Test of Cubism: The Fourth Test

The fourth Ashes Test between the old rivals was the game deconstructed, the traditional sport dismantled and reassembled in a bizarre shape.

Let's be clear, this isn't a justification of the pitch which produced a triumph and the another short match of the series.

Leaving 10mm of grass on the wicket, resulting in 36 wickets falling in less than a brief period, is not a balanced duel between offense and defense.

A Varied History: The Nature of Test Cricket

But any suggestion this was a lesser event, one that should be footnoted as inauthentic, is wide of the mark.

The format is a varied portfolio, a long history and ongoing. On occasion, like in Melbourne, the cricket ball behaves unpredictably for the seamers. In contrast, it grips and turns on a spinning track. Sometimes, the pitch is unresponsive, other times it bounces unevenly.

The thrillers are all the more thrilling owing to the patience devoted elsewhere.

Adaptation: The Core Skill

Certain variables are accepted more freely than others.

The argument in during the match was that the balance was tipped too far towards the attack. That the skilled individuals were prevented from playing their natural game.

Test cricket is about adapting to challenges – assessing the situation and adapting accordingly. The top two individual innings were made by world-class batters. One team was less disciplined than the other, and thus lost.

Sheer Celebration: The Supporters' View

Go and inform the devotees who have experienced years of defeat that this wasn't compelling.

Among the crowd of the ground, countless fans waved their flags and created an atmosphere, fostering a carnival vibe in a bastion of national pride.

There was optimism as the bowlers surged, impetus when players fought back, and unconditional love when the result was confirmed.

Contrasting Examples: The Spectrum of Test Matches

The Melbourne has previous experience with controversial surfaces. In the past, a game there featured a wicket with all the life of a a non-event.

That match was a slog, with limited drama and interminable tedium. This recent match and that slow Test are diametrically opposed points of the scale – neither the standard, yet significance can be attached to each.

Four Tests into the ongoing battle, it is the two-day matches that will remain iconic in the history books.

"Far from being the demise of Test cricket at all," commented a veteran. "The people who have been privileged to see these two days have been treated to some fantastic sport. Different entertainment."

Small Victories: Looking Ahead

In the lead-in to this Test, the leader talked like a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

The team responded for him, reinstating the smile to his countenance.

Different players stepped up with vital performances. These are incremental gains, not nearly enough to guarantee long-term stability, but a foundation to use as a platform.

At the very least, this Melbourne victory takes its place among other memorable performances in meaningless games.

As the supporters left into a stunning sunset, the team congregated on the field to begin their own celebrations.

Savour the moment, men. It's well deserved.
