Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
